Important News About Emperor Investments

Emperor Investments was started with the goal of bringing tailored dividend investments to those who needed it the most. We have come a long way since our launch and are extremely proud of what our small team has accomplished. Unfortunately, we have not reached the growth required to be a sustainable business in the long run. Effective immediately, Emperor Investments has ceased operations as a registered investment adviser. Therefore, as of Monday October 21, 2019, Emperor is closed, and we will no longer be your investment advisor.

We want to reassure you that your assets will still be available to you. Your account is held at Emperor’s third-party brokerage firm, Folio Investments Inc. You can access your assets at Folio by following the instructions below.

We are very thankful for your trust and support since the beginning.

Wishing you the best on your investment journey,

The Emperor Team

What happens to the assets in my Emperor account?

You have the option to transfer your assets out of Emperor to your preferred wealth manager. If you do not transfer your assets from our portal by November 21st, 2019, here are your options:

  • Keep your account with Folio, where your account will become ‘self-directed’. You can access your account and have the ability to make trades through Folio directly (for login instructions see: How do I access my Emperor account at Folio). Folio’s standard account fees will apply if you choose this option. You will receive more information directly from Folio about this option.
  • Liquidate your holdings by logging into Folio directly (here), and transfer your funds to your bank account on file and close your account with Folio.
  • Transfer your account to another registered investment advisor or brokerage firm. Please contact your new advisor or brokerage firm representative to implement this option.

How do I access my tax documents and account statements?

You can access tax documents from the previous year, as well as account statements, through Folio’s website. Your 2019 tax documents should become available on the Folio platform around March 1, 2020. You will receive an email from Folio notifying you when they are available.

After November 21st 2019, your account and statements will no longer be accessible through Emperor Investments. To view historical account statements and access year-end tax documents, you will need to log into Folio (for login instructions see: How do I access my Emperor account at Folio).

What tax documents should I expect?

Depending on the type of account(s) you have with Emperor, you should expect the following document(s):

  1. For an Emperor Individual account (standard taxable account) with dividends or realized gains/losses, Folio Investments will post a Consolidated 1099. Please note that some taxable accounts will have 2 Consolidated 1099s this year.
  2. For any IRAs (Traditional, Roth, or SEP) with any distributions/withdrawals (meaning that you have reached the age of 59½ and have begun taking money out, or you’ve taken money out early and are subject to penalties), Folio Investments will post a 1099-R.
  3. For any IRAs with contributions/deposits, Folio Investments will post a form 5498 (this won't be available until late May 2020 because you can contribute to an IRA through mid-April). Please note that a Form 5498 is for informational purposes only. You are not required to file it with your tax return.

If you have any questions, please contact Folio directly via email at [email protected] or via phone at 1-(888)-485-3456.

I withdrew all my money - why is there still money in my Emperor account?

The stocks you owned through Emperor likely paid dividends to shareholders. Dividends are usually paid quarterly, as of an announced ex-dividend date. If you owned a stock as of the ex-dividend date, then sold the stock and withdrew your funds before the dividend was paid, then the dividend would deposit into your Folio account. Thereby, increasing your Folio account balance.

If you initiated an account transfer, Folio will forward these funds to your new brokerage account. If you withdrew funds to your linked bank account, you will need to request the remaining balance from Folio.
